Eerie, experimental death metal. You can see that this is some fucked up stuff just by the promo photos or live performances, but it's hard to properly describe the true fucked-upness of Portal's music.

It's very noisy and has a "faded", distorted sound, although audibly very technical with lots of mind-numbing notes going on. The atmosphere is obscure, much like a suicidal black metal or doom band would be, yet pertains to musical structures unlike those styles. I can't really compare Portal to any other death metal band I've heard before. Maybe Impetuous Ritual, Ulcerate, or Mitochondrion, although those are all still very different.

Portal's music is atonal, dissonant, and generally just fucking creepy. Some say it's "death metal for black metal people", I'll let you decide.
