Eluveitie is a folk metal band that formed in 2002 and is from Berna, Switzerland. To date they have released 5 albums (1 is a compilation), 1 EP and 1 live album. There sound is notably quite inconsistent and has changed from album to album. They started as a melodic death metal band with heavy celtic overtones and grew into a iconic Celtic folk metal sound. They are one of the many folk metal bands that I think have lost there way.
I think "Spirit" and especially "Slania" was a true testament to how good folk metal can really be. I think everyone was a little fathomed when they decided to do an acoustic album after the huge success of "Slania". It was bold and I think in many ways that's where the band fell off as a leader in the folk metal scene. Personally I did enjoy parts of their acoustic album but the subsequent release I would not be a fan of. It came across as very genre dividing in the sense that it wouldn't have the same classic feel as "Slania". The songs shifted from melodic death metal to others having the folk sound present on the previous album. Personally I always thought they were strongest when they meshed the two together.
With all the downsides and upsides I release this as is. I'm sure fans of the genre and even those who aren't have probably taken a listen but in the interest of archiving here it is. And who knows, maybe they'll return to form one day....
