The Sickening - Death Devastation Decay (2009)

Death Devastation Decay, the new album from Norway’s The Sickening, is a gloriously faithful but unoriginal album of the brutal death metal variety, what with the gurgled vocal styling, gallop drumming, and complex and grove-oriented riffing—not to mention their enthusiasm for psychosexual violence imagery, which is also a cliché. I suppose that the single unconventional element present in this album is the absence of horror-movie samples—not that I mind them, though, but they are, we have to admit, quite clichéd at this point in the history of the genre—to introduce and/or conclude each of the songs. Lean and mean, I reckon, is The Sickening’s modus operandi—and it suits them, as well as fans of the genre, just fine.
