Abdullah - Abdullah (2000)

This self titeled release does mainly lie inbetween stoner rock and traditional doom metal, but from time to time there is a song that can be better qualified as pure stoner rock rather than stoom (stoner doom). Another thing that might interrest those who have heard and enjoyed their previous release Snake Lore. Two of the songs, The Path To Enlightenment and The Black ones, is the same songs and versions that vere released on the Snake Lore mCD. Some might find that a bad thing, but I don't agree. Both songs were some of the highlights of Snake Lore and is still just as good. There are many good things about this album. It is one of those albums that one can sit down and actively listen to, yet it works perfectly as background music for relaxation. A truly noteworthy thing about the music is the vocals. Even at first listen it is obvious that the vocalist sings very much alike Ozzy Osbourne. Then as the songs progress it becomes clear that not even Ozzy could have pulled through the perfection of Abdullah. The band has all the instruments required to pull off the old-school sound. Guitar, bass and drums. Ye tthe old-school style is guised in new clothes. A laid back vibe so thypical for stoner bands, follow through on the whole album. In addition the music is much heavier than the old classics. You can expect all from rock solos, to stoner ballads, to relaxed depression, to catchy riffs and then to doom as heavy as a hammer. It's a little for all tastes in here, yet it never leaves the core of the music, making all of it sound like it belongs together. One of the more interresting things about this album is the lyrics. They stay true to the old rock/punk lyrics, yet they always bring on new themes and new ideas. Almost like a philosophical freshness to the old greatness. This might not say much to some so I will elaborate this. The lyrics are socially aware and criticizes western society a lot. But unlike the anger that punk rock has, the lyrics here is more fitting to the music. Instead of the anger is a prophets voice, calmly explaining the ways of the world and the horrors that it will bring. Many mythical elements have been added as metaphorical explanations. The stoner rocks tendency to explore the mind has not been left out either. The lyrics truly both reflects the multitude of influences that Abdullah has, and creates their very own identity in the world of music.
