Abruptum was formed in 1989 by IT and All. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. The same year they recorded their first two demos. After the release of the first demo they kicked out their bass player Ext. After the release of a 7" EP All began to drink heavily and was forced to leave the band. IT then found a new member in Evil from the young band Marduk. The band became kind of famous very much thanks to the fact that IT was one of the leaders within what was called the Satanic Black Circle. As IT left the scene completely after several events within the circle and threats to him and his family, Morgan continued the band on his own, and decided to put an end to Abruptum in 2005.- Genre: Suicidal Ambient Black/Doom Metal

Have you ever felt the compulsive need to slice your wrists or those of all the people around you? Have you ever truly gazed into the Abyss? Have you seen the crimson demon wings demanding utter obedience and urging your pathetic waste of flesh to commit unspeakable atrocities? This album gives me just that. From the very first second you get plunged into the darkest depths of Satan's Hellish empire. Darker than black and infinitly more bloody than all the gore bands combined, this is extremely wicked and unpleasant. The chaos and pain that It and Evil have put to tape is so vile that mere human words fail to describe the sheer evil that drips from my stereoset. All things unpleasant and distasteful suddenly become very rewarding. In this trip of blasphemy and intolerance all that is human gets stripped from your soul until there is a bleeding corpse left. Upon closer viewing you realize that the corpse is you. This album is pain, suicide, rape, torture, violence, intolerance, war, all things evil into one burst of negative emotions. There is no way anyone can review this album with a musical point of view. How can you give a musically based judgement on something that is not, nor tries to be, music? The rating above is simply a matter of taste. Very effective to be played at maximum volume in a completely lightless surrounding. It will truly kill your sanity.

In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, In Aeternum In Triumpho Tenebrarum (1994)
In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, In Aeternum In Triumpho Tenebrarum (1994)Hailing from Sweden, Abruptum is not unknown to anybody who enjoys good audio-terror/noise recordings. I've sat here a couple of hours and thought of a proper way to review something like this, but it is pretty hard. Let's take it step by step, shal we? In this particular recording Abruptum consists of IT (Tony Särkkä) and Evil (Morgan Håkansson, also in Marduk) creating a soundtrack of your nightmares. “Listening to them can be described as lying in bed with 43 degrees fever while having someone slashing your wrists.” This is how Regain Records describe Abruptum’s pieces. I can say that this is exactly the way Regain describes it. This piece is also very different from Abruptum’s demos which have some sort of linear structure with some sort of death-ish riffs and deep growls. This recording has pretty much no regular riffs or a rhythm throughout. It is just 60 minutes of pure audio torture. It’s been said that the members were torturing themselves while recording their pieces and that I think that can be true, the screams are no regular growls which Abruptum overwhelmed us with in their demos and early recordings. These are pure screams that reflect anguish and pain. I think there is no point in debating the lyrics since I think there aren’t any. Instead, Abruptum’s creative minds have brought forth a recording that contains more than guitars, bas, drums and vocals. We can also hear violin, synthesizers and other special effects, but the instruments are somehow sublime, the drums and the vocals dominate the recording, in my opinion. The drums are slow most of the parts here, but that is no disadvantage whatsoever. Another factor that dominates this recording is the echo that gives a feeling that this recording takes place in a dungeon. The feeling in this recording is enormous. This is no recording meant for the feeble hearted or people who do not appreciate art in general. I consider Abruptum as art, although the geniuses behind it may seem as madmen. This recording is one of those that go down in history as a masterpiece. But that is just my opinion. Listen to it and let your nightmares loose.

Evil Genius (1995)
Evil Genius (1995)Abruptum's "Evil Genius" compilation constitutes their most accessible and coherent efforts and is ideal for a new listener. Regardless, they're still an extremely bizarre and abrasive group, and the criticisms and attacks against them are understandable considering their aesthetic, style and sound are generally difficult to stomach. Personally I can't get enough of the primitive filth found on this album, and I even enjoy their three follow-ups which are even less inviting and listener friendly. While most people will either laugh or cringe at these guys, there are some who dig the most uncompromisingly harsh stuff around regardless of the goofs who make it. I most especially recommend this to fans of gritty demo stage death metal (or death/doom) rather than fans of early black metal, on account of it fits in a lot better with the former than the latter. Abruptum remain a weird little gem in my eyes and I'll continue to feast my ears on this unearthly masterpiece.

Vi Sonus Veris Nigrae Malitiae (1997)
Vi Sonus Veris Nigrae Malitiae (1997)“Vi Sonus Veris Nigrae” weird, abstract and abysmal noise. If you expect some Black Metal don’t buy this, because this not Metal at all. This is the kind of thing that must be listened when angry, or when you are planning to kill someone. Here you will find agonizing screams, drums, sometimes noise coming out of a guitar and some chants in the background. This is pure audio hell, this will scare the shit out of any person not associated with Black Metal, or as well some will find this ridiculous, depending on their point of view. So if you need some dark background music probably you will enjoy this, but don’t buy it expecting to hear music, because it is not.
